Jason B’s review published on Letterboxd:
This is the movie we wanted the Justice League to be. Snyder hit the mark with this movie and as it stands now I can’t think of another comic book movie I’ve enjoyed more than this. But I’m pretty high after having just finished it and usually I don’t see things clearly at that point. I’m sure when I wake up tomorrow I will remember how much I loved The Dark Knight and Man of Steel so I’m not sure but goddamn this was a thoroughly satisfying movie, especially for DC fans.
There is so much that worked in this movie and I didn’t mind the runtime at all but as I said in my review of the theatrical release back in 2017, I’m biased because I love these characters and I have since I was a kid. With the theatrical release, I pretty much convinced myself that I can forgive all of its flaws since this is The Justice League. But now that I have seen the Snyder cut, I realize how much potential was unrealized in that original release.
This movie is so entirely different in plot, script, tone, and execution, that it almost doesn’t make sense to do a comparison to what happened in 2017. But I will say the number one thing that makes this movie miles beyond what its predecessor was, is the very important act of developing the characters and helping the viewer understand their story so that we actually give a shit what happens at the end of the movie. The most obvious improvement to me was the development of Steppenwolf as a nemesis. Among so many other things, this made such a huge difference in my investment in this plot while watching.
But all of the heroes’ stories were better told in this movie as well and it made it so much more rewarding. I will be watching this movie again many times over, and it will certainly go down as one of my favorite comic book movies of all time.
