This is a delightful little British comedy horror that I seem to love more than most people, but here we are and this is me.
It starts out as a kidnapping flick before turning into a slasher and there are plenty of hysterical parts although never at the complete expense of frights. I’m apparently immune to jump scares, but there was one here that made me kinda half-twitch and I feel like that’s really saying something.

Two idiots led by a royally agitated Andy Serkis kidnap the stepdaughter of a syndicate boss for ransom but soon discover there's more than just trailing hitmen and oddball locals out in the countryside.
Undermined by indecisive posters and video covers, one gets the impression writer/director Paul Andrew Williams wanted to make a horror film, but maybe hedged bets against his career following that trajectory. So for a good while it's a caper involving the kidnappers fumbling about with their headstrong hostage before suddenly becoming pure inbred cannibal terror upon coming across a not-so-friendly neighbor.
Funny pure inbred cannibal terror, that is. How much The Cottage embraces the horror is what catches most off-guard. It still plays up darkly comedic…
The Cottage starts off slowly on the horror front to the point where I was cursing Tubi for mislabeling the movie. But then…OH!
A bloody good time. 🔪

Some seriously funny moments makes this film the best slasher comedy right after Tucker and Dale vs Evil.
Andy Serkis is brilliant, I like him more and more with every film. However, the blonde chick was fucking annoying. Will-someone-please-backhand-her-repeatedly-annoying. If that's what they went for, you might say that they succeeded.
Brothers Andy Serkis and Reece Shearsmith kidnap gangsters daughter Jennifer Ellison and hide out at a little cottage then all hell breaks loose...this is one gleefully gory feature with excellent performances from Serkis & Shearsmith.
Film #2 of Hoop-tober 2018
I had no expectations, but it's a pretty funny low budget British comedy horror about two brothers (Serkis and Shearsmith) who didn't do a good job planning out kidnapping for ransom. Very soon, it's going horribly wrong and turning into a slasher when a terribly disfigured farmer is on the loose, and he not in a good mood. Also, it features a cameo from Doug Bradley.
"The Cottage" skillfully intertwines dark comedy and horror in the eerie British countryside, creating a suspenseful and unsettling atmosphere. The film effectively employs sparing but impactful gore, enhancing the visceral horror experience and complementing the strategically placed jump scares. The British rural countryside landscape adds to the overall feeling of isolation and the eerie atmosphere. The diverse cast of characters, notably the bumbling criminals and their mouthy kidnapped victim, is the key source of humour, and effectively sets up the simple yet engaging plot, while the suspense and unexpected twists maintain engagement. While not a genre-defining masterpiece, "The Cottage" offers a well-rounded horror experience that appeals to those who enjoy the mix of humor, gore, and suspense.
I have watched this film many times throughout the past 15 years. It's endlessly entertaining.
A dark horror comedy, where Andy Serkis and his brother, Reece Shearsmith kidnap the lovely, Jennifer Ellison and hold her for ransom in a remote cottage. Steven O'Donnell is their inside accomplish.
The opening 1/2 hour highlights the poorly run kidnapping, but leads into unexpected horror heaven.
Never funny but I found myself smiling to myself in that demented kinds of way.
Jennifer Ellison is absolutely priceless in this one.
A cameo by Doug Bradley and Steven Berkoff (at the end of the credits).
The humungous, Dave Legeno (RIP) is in this as well and is stellar.

Okay. I really wanted to like this more than I did. Reece Shearsmith and Andy Serkis are great together and there are witty and comedic moments throughout. (But I felt they could've been better). Jennifer Ellison, imo, was hilarious and the slashery activities were what saved it for me.
I recommend it if you liked Tucker and Dale vs Evil.
This is a really fun black comedy horror and was just as much fun at home as it was back in the cinema 14 years ago!
